Daring to be Better | Karen Kelly Photography

Too often, we become comfortable. Comfortable in our homes, in our relationships, and certainly in our work. As a creative, the moment you get comfortable is the moment your work goes downhill. That’s a fact. So when I was looking for a photography workshop intensive for the winter, I went looking for inspiration. Something different from myself. Something to make me uncomfortable. And that is exactly what I found at the DARE Wedding Photography Workshop held at the Ace Hotel in Palm Springs, CA. The trip was a sensory awakening in every way – palm trees, suntan lotion, burned skin, warm breezes, sand beneath my feet, funny accents, bathing suits and an instructor whose work couldn’t be more different than mine. Marshall Gray (a.k.a. Gary Lashmar) is a London-based wedding photographer who instructed our group of 10 for the week. We had lots of time for exploration over the week, both internally and physically. For the most part, we waged a coup on technology and had it turned off when the group was together. We had the luxury of having models onsite everyday in various locations, and we also took turns modeling for each other.

Every time I hit the shutter, I put a piece of myself within that photograph. So my inner karma always matters – not just to me, but to anyone in in my images. I was looking for a course that would push me out of my usual shooting style and away from my mental comfort zone to help get my inspired for the year to come. This course did exactly that. The result is an another added dimension to my work that I can’t wait to bring to all of you. I hope you find these images half as inspiring as I found the journey.
